Classroom AHA Courses

All students taking classroom American Heart Association (AHA) courses are required to have the current AHA textbook that is appropriate for the classroom course they are attending.  Textbooks can be purchased from AHA vendors (see below).  Emergency Services does not sell or provide AHA textbooks.

Basic Life Support

This course includes a video-guided lecture and hands-on skills.  It covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag mask), foreign body airway obstruction ("choking"), and automated external defibrillator (AED) use.  Successful completion of written and skills tests will result in a 2 year certification.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 4.5 hours
  • Target Audience - Health care professionals and other personnel who need to know CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in and out of hospital settings. Including, but not limited to EMS professionals, firefighters, nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals.
  • Minimum Number of Students: 5
  • Required Textbook for Classroom Course: AHA Item # 15-1010 or 15-3102 (e-book)
  • Course Cost Per Student: $40 (textbook NOT included)

Heartsaver CPR/ AED 

This class includes a video-guided lecture and hands-on skills.  It teaches adult CPR, AED, and foreign body airway obstruction ("choking").  Optional modules can that can be instructed include child CPR and AED use, and Infant CPR including child and infant choking.  The optional modules allow for a course to be taught to fit your needs. Successful completion of a skills test will result in a 2 year certification.  This course does not include a mandatory written examination.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 3 hours
  • Target Audience: Anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic CPR & AED training, receive certification and/or is a requirement for their employment to be CPR certified.
  • Minimum Number of Students: 5
  • Required Textbook for Classroom Course: AHA Item# 15-1020 or 15-3116 (e-book)
  • Course Cost Per Student: $30 (textbook NOT included)

Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, and AED  

This class includes a video-guided lecture and hands-on skills.  The course teaches basic first aid for a variety medical emergencies and adult CPR, AED, and choking relief.  Optional modules that can be instructed include child CPR and AED use, and infant CPR including child and infant choking. The optional modules allow for a course to be taught to fit your needs.  Successful completion of a skills test in first aid and CPR will result in a 2 year certification.  There is not a mandatory written examination for this course.

  • Approximate Course Length: Approximately 4-5 Hours
  • Target Audience: Anyone who is not a health care provider and would like to learn basic first aid, CPR, and AED use and receive a certification card and/or is a requirement for their employment to be CPR and first aid certified.
  • Minimum Number of Students: 5
  • Required Textbook Classroom Course: AHA Item# 15-1018 or 15-3117 (e-book)
  • Course Cost Per Student: $40 (textbook NOT included)
