The Detective Division of the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office is currently under the command of Chief of Detectives Captain Jordan Haines. Within the Division, there are detectives with specialized training in several fields, including fire and arson investigation, juvenile crimes, sex crimes, domestic violence intervention, welfare fraud, elderly abuse and computer and internet related crime. The Sheriff's Office "Special Response Team" tactical unit, Cold Case Unit, and Narcotics Officers are also under the direction of the Detective Division.
Being a small department in a mostly rural community, our detectives are required to investigate the full range of crime in Cattaraugus County. In order to be better prepared for this wide variety, each detective receives advanced training in several areas. Each detective can then draw from the experience and training of the other members of the unit.
Associated with the Detective Division is our Evidence/Property Section. Investigator Dawn Smith is in charge of the custody and processing of all of the evidence and property that comes into the department. Investigator Smith has received extensive training in the technical aspects of evidence gathering and forensics.
