Weights & Measures

Effective June 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022, the Cattaraugus County Legislature approved limiting county sales tax on gasoline and diesel to the first $3.00.  Act No. 209-2022, sponsored by all 17 legislative members and approved on April 27, 2022, is aimed at providing drivers some relief at the pump.  In conjunction with the Cattaraugus County sales tax relief, New York State enacted their own relief, also starting June 1st and expiring at the end of 2022.  While the Department of Public Works Director of Weights and Measures is responsible for ensuring gas and diesel pumps dispense accurate amounts of fuels, they are NOT responsible for enforcing or monitoring the County or State sales tax reductions.  Pump station owners and operators should adjust their pricing accordingly and any complaints should be directed towards the pump stations.  If consumers still feel they have been unfairly charged the discounted taxes, they must contact the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance using the following link:  https://www.tax.ny.gov/help/contact/fraud/report-tax-fraud.htm
