Quarantines after Direct Contact with a Positive Cases of COVID-19

Asymptomatic individuals who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to quarantine after an exposure to a COVID-19 positive case. Fully vaccinated is defined as being 2 weeks or more after either receipt of the second dose in a 2-dose series, or 2 weeks or more after receipt of one dose of a single-dose vaccine. Fully vaccinated individuals should be tested for COVID-19 between the third and fifth day after exposure and must wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days or until receiving a negative test result.

Asymptomatic individuals exposed to a COVID-19 positive case but who have been previously diagnosed with laboratory confirmed COVID-19, and have since recovered will be exempt from quarantine based on either 90 days from the date of symptom onset from the initial COVID-19 infection or 90 days from the date of first positive diagnostic test. These individuals will be exempt if criteria above is met and only if they are asymptomatic after exposure to a confirmed positive laboratory case of COVID-19.

Individuals who have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive case, who are not fully vaccinated or have not recovered from COVID-19 in the previous 3 months, are required to quarantine for 10 days after exposure… a test should be sought immediately if any symptoms develop during the 14 days after exposure.

Irrespective of quarantine status, all individuals exposed to COVID-19 must:

  • Monitor symptoms daily from day of exposure (or first date of awareness of exposure if there is a delay) through Day 14;
  • Continue strict adherence to all recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions, including hand hygiene and the use of face coverings, through Day 14 (even if fully vaccinated);
  • Immediately self-isolate if any symptoms develop and contact Cattaraugus County Health Department at 716- 701-xxxx or their health care provider to report this change in clinical status and determine if they should seek testing. Cattaraugus County Health Department will make the final decisions about how long quarantine should last for Cattaraugus County residents, based on local conditions and needs.

Close Contacts

Individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have not recovered from COVID-19 in the previous 3 months, who have been exposed to someone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, are considered close contacts* if they:

  • Share the same household;
  • Had direct physical contact;
  • Had direct contact with infectious secretions from the person with COVID-19 or suspected COVID-19; or
  • Were within 6 feet of a case for 15 minutes or more over a 24 hour period

*Exception: In the K–12 indoor classroom setting, the close contact definition excludes students who were within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student (laboratory-confirmed or a clinically compatible illness) if both the infected student and the exposed student(s) correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks the entire time.

This exception does not apply to teachers, staff, or other adults in the indoor classroom setting.

Contact Tracing

Contact Tracers work with people who have tested positive for COVID-19 to identify people they have had contact with and let them know they may have been exposed to the disease.

After being tested for COVID-19, use this form [above] to help identify anyone you have had contact with.
