The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging wants to recognize National Family Caregivers Month as a time to honor caregivers’ selflessness and extend our gratitude for improving the lives of others.  This is a salute to the generosity and sacrifices caregivers in our community make each and every day.  We encourage caregivers to be kind to themselves and access services that may lighten their caregiving duties.

Services

The Cattaraugus County Department of Aging has several services geared to provide relief to caregivers:

Caregiver Binders

The binders are provided at no cost and are a great place to store and organize essential information pertaining to your loved one. There are sections for you to list your loved ones medications, allergies, doctor visits, emergency contacts, POA/HCP, and other vital information.

Caregiver Resource Center (CRC)

CRC funds purchased caregiver e-books that can be accessed at no cost through the Chautauqua / Cattaraugus Library System. Caregivers have the use of e-books without coming into contact with a single person and risking exposure to COVID-19.

If you prefer hard copy materials, the Caregiver Resource Center located in the Olean office has caregiver videos and books. Call to find out how to access the materials.

Caregiver Services, Assistive Devices and PPE Kits

Caregiver consultations are provided at no cost and are available either in person or over the telephone.  In addition to care consultations, caregivers can be provided information on support groups, training opportunities, respite (homecare, daycare) and/or safety services.  The department has multiple funding sources and will work with the caregiver to help establish their options.

Options for assistive devices may include internet monitoring cameras, door/window alarms, automatic nightlights, Personal Emergency Response System buttons (PERS), and smart smoke detectors.

Those who care for an individual who has dementia may also be eligible for Personal Protective Equipment kits. The kits include disposable gloves, disposable masks, hand sanitizer, a touchless thermometer, and information on services that are available within the community.
