There is an EBT scam being used across the country. The text claims that Social Services is deactivating your EBT card. DSS will never send a text out regarding your benefits or card. NEVER return a call to a text like this and NEVER give your PIN number to someone. If you think there is a problem with your case or your EBT card, call your local DSS or the number on the back of your card. Responding to this text will most definitely result in your benefits being stolen.
We strongly recommend downloading the ebtedge.com app. Through the app you can turn your card on/off, turn off out-of-state purchases and check your balances. This is the only state-approved app – other apps are not valid.
The most recent scam text is coming from 888-421-6229 and says "We've deactivated your food benefits card. Call this number to restore its use". The number and words are changed frequently - as soon as they know someone is on to them. They mostly send these scam texts on weekends when the local office is closed and not available to take your call.
When in doubt, contact the local DSS office at 716-373-3065 or call the number printed on the back of your EBT card.
