Last night (Nov. 22, 2022), the Cattaraugus County Legislature passed it’s 2023- $272.4 million County Budget. This budget:

  • Keeps taxes flat compared to 2022 with over 2/3rds of the local municipalities seeing decreases in their County tax levies. The 2023 tax levy is  unchanged at $55,249,000;
  • addresses a robust capital program infusing $27,116,000 into road, culvert and bridge work and another $6,275,220 into building and grounds work totaling to a monumental $33,391,220 effort in 2023;
  • This budget addresses many economic development initiatives, including strong support for the Empire Cheese Project in Franklinville, the Allegany sewer project; The Ellicottville Parking lot project; the Thatcher Brook Flood Mitigation project in Gowanda, enhancements associated with the Onoville Marina Park, and continued support for local non-profit groups;
  • addresses stability in staffing without creating any new County positions;
  • This budget continues to address animal safety issues that have become more prevalent over recent years;
  • This budget is <$1,978,659 under the New York State Property Tax cap requirements.

Cattaraugus County Legislative Finance Committee Chairman, Andrew Burr noted that the Budget passed unanimously, and that the County levy was unchanged through the pandemic and over the last four years.  He noted that for the fourth year in a row it contains no increase in the tax levy.
