PLEASE NOTE: Effective July 1, 2022, Cattaraugus County Transfer Stations will no longer be accepting Construction and Demolition material (C&D), with the exception of the Salamanca Transfer Station. This service will be offered to residential property owners and their small scale projects only. Commercial and contractor projects should plan to direct their material to a registered construction and demolition debris handling and recovery facility.

TRANSFER STATION RULES & REGULATIONS

Please be advised that Transfer Station Operators are required to inspect all loads for manageability by the station. Loads containing unacceptable material will be prohibited from dumping. Waste and recyclable materials shall be source separated by the user and placed in the proper containers as provided by the transfer station.

The general types of waste accepted at transfer stations are:

Garbage – Includes, but is not limited to, general household trash, non-recyclable paper products, and non-hazardous household materials.

Recyclables – Includes, but is not limited to, acceptable clear glass bottles and jars, #1 and #2 plastic containers, tin and aluminum cans, newspapers, boxboard, magazines and unwanted “junk” mail, cardboard, vehicle batteries, electronics, and small quantities of yard waste. All recyclables must be clean and properly prepared in accordance with guidelines established by the Commissioner of Public Works.

Metal – Includes, but is not limited to, white goods (without Freon), short steel, and household-generated metal wastes. Excessively large pieces of metal such as autobodies will not be accepted. Non-metal attachments must be removed. Any metal waste containing fuel, oil, other flammable or water must be completely drained.

Construction & Demolition Debris – Only accepted at the Salamanca Transfer Station.

Bulky Items– Includes, but is not limited to, furniture, pallets, rugs, mattresses, box springs, porcelain fixtures, and fiberglass tub/shower units. Please note that bulky items are not accepted at the Allegany Transfer Station.

SPECIFIC RULES REGARDING TRANSFER STATIONS EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2025

1. Bulky Items limited to three (3) cubic yards (as described below) per day. Items shall be no longer than eight (8) feet in length.

2. Construction and Demolition Debris will only be accepted at the Salamanca Transfer Station and must be scaled. Two (2) bags of C&D that are tied off (up to 64-gallon bags) can be accepted at all transfer stations except Allegany.

3. Metal shall be limited to three (3) cubic yards per day. Any metal containing liquids or flammable liquids must be completely drained and the reservoir drilled out or it will not be accepted.

4. Garbage shall be limited to three (3) cubic yards per day at the “Public Only” transfer stations. 35-gallon bags are the maximum size accepted at the Allegany Transfer Station. Commercial loads of garbage are accepted at the Salamanca Transfer Station only.

5. Yard Waste must be free of contamination and is limited to five (5) 30-gallon bags per day at $1 per bag at all transfer stations except for Machias, Conewango, and Five Points which do not accept yard waste. All material must be less than four inches (4”) in diameter and less than four feet (4’) in length.

COMMERCIAL COLLECTORS will be allowed at the Salamanca Transfer Station only.

REFRIGERANT CONTAINING APPLIANCES must be declared refrigerant free by an EPA-certified technician to avoid the $15.00 fee charged for accepting these items at the transfer stations. Chain of custody receipt required.

"PUBLIC ONLY" TRANSFER STATIONS are intended for the use of residential customers.

Cattaraugus County Transfer Stations are unable to accept any wastes generated outside of the county, except by prior arrangement with the Commissioner of Public Works.

Paint Waste

The only paint waste accepted at Cattaraugus County Transfer Stations is dry latex paint.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS

Return fluorescent lights to place of purchase for recycling (suggested resources listed below). Transfer stations cannot accept waste containing

BATTERIES

  • Automotive batteries that are not leaking or damaged can be brought to a transfer station.
  • Rechargeable batteries can be returned to place of purchase.
  • Other batteries (such as electric vehicle, solar, or lithium ion batteries) cannot be accepted at Cattaraugus County transfer stations.

PLASTIC BAGS

Plastic bags are accepted at most retail locations for recycling at a collection box near the front of the store. Plastic bags are harmful to the environment - consider recycling, reusing them, or switching to reusable bags to reduce their use.

USED CLOTHING/TEXTILES

There are collection boxes located at the Allegany, Dayton, Machias, Portville, and Salamanca transfer stations. Consider donating to a local charity, religious organization, or a local family. For a list of donation sites, visit: nysar3.org.

MOTOR OIL

  • Waste oil and automotive fluids are not accepted at County Transfer Stations.
  • Up to five (5) gallons of oil per day may be recycled at a local service station
