CATTARAUGUS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

LOCATED IN LITTLE VALLEY, NEW YORK

Based in the historic county seat of Little Valley, New York, the Department of Public Works includes Engineering, Highway, Fleet, and Refuse divisions. JOB DESCRIPTION

The work involves planning and performing office and fieldwork related activities that support public work projects. The Land Surveyor would establish control, perform topographic field surveys, and make technical assumptions as related to specified projects. The Land surveyor would determine Right of Way (ROW) Survey, establish ROW and property lines, and prepare acquisition maps. Supervision may be exercised over employees involved in survey related work. The Land Surveyor does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Plans, coordinates and performs with the assistance of staff members, field work involving surveying land to determine precise locations and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours for construction map-making or other purposes
  • Researches previous survey evidence, maps, deeds, and other records to obtain data needed for surveys
  • Determines methods and procedures for boundary surveys and establishing/reestablishing survey control
  • Keeps accurate notes, records, and sketches to describe and certify work performed
  • Coordinates findings with work of contracted engineering firms and surveyors and other government agencies
  • Exercises independent professional judgement on complex highway or  land boundary determinations
  • Establishes and documents procedures and methods utilized for land surveying and work projects
  • Develops technological procedures and standards as advancements and new developments in computer aided drafting and surveying occur and move to promptly and effectively initiate their use
  • Utilizes industry standards re: photogrammetry, balancing, & process of field data/interpretation of NYS Laws
  • Manages survey projects, schedule priorities for supporting staff, provide professional guidance and technical direction to engineering staff
  • Prepares and stamps “taking maps” for various acquisitions
  • Provides expert witness testimony as required by the County Attorney

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Land Surveyor in New York State.

SALARY RANGE & BENEFITS

  • $81,000-$89,000 annual salary
