Aerial Larvicide Spraying Underway in Cattaraugus County

Cattaraugus County, NY – The Cattaraugus County Health Department is notifying residents that aerial larvicide spraying has begun this week as part of our ongoing mosquito control efforts. Spraying will be conducted only over wetland areas in municipalities that have opted to participate in the program, which include Allegany, Carrollton, Great Valley, Hinsdale, Olean, Portville, and Salamanca.

The larvicide application is designed to reduce the mosquito population by targeting larvae before they become biting adults. Spraying operations are expected to be completed by the end of the weekweather permitting.

The department appreciate the public’s patience as we work to provide some relief from mosquitoes and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

How You Can Help Prevent Mosquito Bites and Illness:

  • Eliminate standing water around your home—empty buckets, flowerpots, birdbaths, and clogged gutters regularly.
  • Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors.
  • Wear protective clothing, such as long sleeves, long pants, and socks, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Ensure window and door screens are intact to keep mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Protect children and infants with mosquito netting and proper repellents suited for their age group.

The Cattaraugus County Health Department remains committed to protecting public health and limiting the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses. We will continue to monitor mosquito activity and take further action as needed.
